You tried the momos. You loved the momos. Now let us introduce you to their more intense, broth-soaked older sibling.
What Is Jhol Momo?
Jhol momo is a Nepali dish where steamed momos are served sitting in a warm, flavorful broth called jhol. The word "jhol" literally means watery or soupy in Nepali. We know that doesn't sound like a five-star sales pitch, but stay with us.
The broth is made from tomatoes, sesame, and Nepali spices, thinned to a pourable consistency and ladled generously over the dumplings. The result is somewhere between a soup and a sauced appetizer. Comforting, bold, and unlike anything else you'll find nearby. The name undersells it. The flavor does not.
How Is It Different From Regular Momos?
Regular momos come with dipping sauce on the side. With jhol momo, the sauce becomes a broth the momos sit in. The dumplings soak up the flavor as you eat, so every bite is more intense than the last. It's a problem you will enjoy having.
Why You Won't Find This Nearby
Jhol momo is a Kathmandu street food staple that almost never makes it onto restaurant menus in the US. Most Indian restaurants don't serve Nepali food at all. We do. And jhol momo is one of our most asked-about dishes, by customers who grew up eating it in Nepal and by people who just stumbled in and got very lucky.
If you've been searching "Nepali food near me" and ending up disappointed, this is the dish that makes the drive to Dacono worth it.
